Tim Smith-Gerding helps nonprofits and funders navigate change and plan for growth.

With two decades of leadership experience in social impact, Tim has helped hundreds of diverse organizations grow and thrive. He specializes in Strategy, Leadership & Organizational Development, Executive Coaching & Facilitation. Tim has been an Executive Director of a nonprofit and foundation, Head of Programs, Funder and Fundraiser. These diverse perspectives lead to the best results for his clients.

Tim elevates community voices and experiences and convenes diverse stakeholders towards ambitious social impact goals. Tim has facilitated short-term and long-term planning for organizations with budget sizes of $100k-$25M and raised 7-figure major gifts for various causes and organizations. He has coached foundation and nonprofit leaders across the country, from grassroots leaders to national CEOs.

In the private sector, Tim has partnered with 30+ companies to conceptualize, implement and scale their social impact and sustainability programs - including Bain Capital, Bank of America, Google, Amazon, Google, Battery Ventures, Flywire and Eastern Bank. He has also advised on the development, deployment and scale of social impact products like Classy and Benevity.

Fluent in Spanish and a first-generation college graduate, Tim has worked to build more equitable communities and systems since his teenage years. He has studied at Harvard Business School, the University of San Francisco and Colby College. Tim has completed racial equity, facilitation, and DEIB training with Stanford and The Interaction Institute for Social Change.

Tim’s social impact work has been featured in Stanford Social Innovation Review, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, the Boston Globe (Social Impact GameChanger), Boston Business Journal, and SF Business Times. He has served on over 15 nonprofit boards in the last two decades, focusing mostly on philanthropy, mental health and workforce development. Tim’s currently the Board Chair of Helix Recovery & Wellness, and a Board Member of The Forward Foundation.


Tim works throughout New England (and remotely). He enjoys reading and writing poetry, working out, self-care and making people laugh and smile. He spends some of his free time managing online communities to support dementia caregivers.
